North Commuter

The Saskatoon North Commuter Project was the grading portion of the North Commuter Parkway & Bridge Project undertaken by Graham Commuter Partners. The Project consisted of the green-field construction of subgrade from the Aspen Ridge subdivision area of McOrmond Drive to the new Chief Mistawasis bridge eastern abutment. The Project also included the construction of the new portion of Central Avenue as well as the twinning of existing Central Avenue north of Attridge Drive.

Our works consisted of over 700,000 m3 of earth to be moved as well as production of rip rap of onsite material and assistance with the Traffic Bridge portion of the project in downtown Saskatoon. The project included very tight tolerances on grading and quality and was delivered on time

CP Rail Spur

Broda Group was involved in the construction of the CP Rail Spur that connects K+S Potash Mine to the Belle Plain Loading Terminal. The Broda team was involved in cuts up to 25 meters deep with associated fill from those cuts to fill the valley floor. The goal of the deep cuts and fills were to construct proper embankment that would allow a rail spur to be constructed so that both empty and loaded trains were able to transit through the Qu’appelle Valley.

The project had many challenges including pore pressures, intercepting ground water in deep cuts, and managing water flow as to not interfere with remaining cuts below the fills being constructed. Equipped with a fleet of our larger excavators, rigid rock trucks, and crawlers, our team was able to successfully move approximately 2,000,000 m3 of earth during the season at the spur.

Plains Expansion

In 2013, Broda was contracted to complete the excavation of a new Brine Pond, including sub-drain, manhole, and sump station install/backfill. In executing this contract, we were also able to provide construction management, execution strategies, and cost-savings to the client that resulted in us being contracted to continue other site expansion projects such as road development, well pad construction, and most significantly, a new rail yard facility. These works included the installation of approximately 15 km of underground storm and surface drainage pipe, 147 manhole and catch basin structures, excavation of 2 storm ponds, and the installation of 2 subdrain manholes and 2 major control structures. Also included was excavation, fine-grading, bedding, concrete pour structures, structure installation, backfill, and pipe install.

Prior to the construction kick-off, Broda was also involved in optimizing the underground drainage design and proposed alternative options for the structures and piping, and sourced other specifications for aggregates. This resulted in a schedule savings of approximately 2 months and a cost savings of over 5 million dollars.

– 1,000,000 tonnes of clay imported by highway trucks
– 100,000 tonnes of sub-ballast imported by highway trucks

Calgary Airport

In 2011, the Calgary Airport Authority underwent the largest expansion in its history including a new 14,000 foot runway, associated taxiways, as well as an aircraft apron and other applicable infrastructure. Rough grading of the site was carried out by Broda Group as the earthworks general contractor. Excavation work in preparation for construction involved the removal of 10,000,000 m3 of material and backfill/subgrade preparation for the new infrastructure. This work also included approximately 14km of ditch/canal excavation for the storm water retention system and the mining of a 1.8 km long tunnel.
